-
Skellig Michael - which means Michael’s rock - is a 230-metre-high rock that juts out of the Atlantic 12 kilometres south-west of Valentia Island, off the Kerry coast. For 600 years the island was an important centre of monastic life for Irish Christian monks. An Irish Celtic monastery was built in 588 at the island’s summit. Its remote, spartan conditions illustrate the reclusive lifestyle of the monks who lived in stone ‘beehive’ huts (clochans), perched above the cliff walls. The island is also home to the world’s second largest colony of seabirds - around 27,000 pairs of gannets. Boat trips run regularly, which can be booked locally.

PADDYFROGS RESTAURANT IN WATERVILLE: This stylish, purpose-built restaurant, which overlooks Waterville Bay, was designed by local architect Albert Walsh. Its warm interior combines original artwork on the walls, subdued lighting, chairs covered in red and green shades, a copper candelabra and mirrors framed with driftwood. Choose from dishes on its varied menu such as Kerry lamb, Sneem black pudding on sauteed sweet apples with cider sauce; home baked breads and Irish farmhouse cheeses. It also has an a la carte vegetarian menu and is wheelchair accessible. Sandra Foster and chef Max Lequet are the pair behind Paddyfrogs. They provide good, well-informed and helpful service and old-fashioned Irish hospitality. Make a reservation on 066-9478766.

LOCAL GALLERIES: While there is no shortage of small galleries and artists’ studios around the ring of Kerry, one of the most impressive is the Cill Rialaig art centre in Ballinskelligs. Built to resemble the early Celtic circular stone forts in Ireland, it holds ongoing exhibitions of diverse paintings and sculpture. The centre also runs children’s art classes during the summer and local art groups during winter months. Stop for a bite to eat for lunch at its cafe, which serves delicious, home-cooked food.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES in the area include golf, sailing, scuba diving, cycling, wind surfing, horse riding, salmon and trout fishing, sea angling, hiking and swimming. One of the best trails for walking and cycling runs from Bolus Head to the south-west of Ballinskelligs village. There is a wealth of history to be discovered too, with many standing stones, dolmens, castles, forts, stone alignments, burial grounds and ogham stones.
