GALWAY
Galway is a delightful example of a European university town with its flower-bedecked medieval streets and a population of over 50,000 enjoying outstanding music and theatre, delightful pubs and restaurants, and marvelous shopping including a world-famous book shop and a Saturday market and antique market.
Over fifteen percent of Galway's population is college students; the resulting interdependence of town and College has helped to build a compact, thriving city that caters to those seeking a vibrant scene with an exuberant buzz. Galway has been enjoying an economic boom in recent times, with the pace of its cultural and social life continually quickening. Over the past thirty years it has undergone major development, but has retained a strong sense of community and history and has avoided many of the problems of larger cities.
Galway loves festivals. In addition to the internationally renowned Galway Arts Festival that takes place 2 weeks in July, and the famous Galway Races, in late July-early August, there are numerous smaller festivals throughout the spring, summer and fall.
