Sneem

Sneem is a charming village idyllically situated between the MacGillycuddy Reeks mountain range and the sea of Kenmare Bay in the southwest of Ireland. The stunning countryside offers an abundance of outdoor activities, while the village itself is full of places to visit, shop, eat, drink and relax.

Sneem village is composed of two squares, north and south, joined by a bridge over Sneem river. The village is quaint and pretty, local pride evident in the colourfully, painted houses and well-tended public areas. Sneem is a regular award-winner in the National Tidy Towns Competition, winning the top prize in 1987.

Sneem’s famous visitors include President Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh, who is buried here, and former French President Charles de Gaulle. Sneem is a treasure trove of international sculpture, including a panda sculpture donated by the People’s Republic of China. “The Way the Fairies Went” is a collection of buildings designed by Kerry sculptor James Scanlon and executed by local stoneworkers on a site overlooking Sneem river by St. Michael’s Church. The project won the National Landscape Award in 1997. The legendary Casey family of rowers and wrestlers were from Sneem, with the most famous, Steve “The Crusher” Casey, undefeated heavyweight wrestling champion of the world 1938-1947, commemorated by a statue in the village.

Life in Sneem happens at a very relaxed pace and the village offers shops, cafés, restaurants and atmospheric pubs in which to browse, refresh oneself by day or while away the evening. For the more energetic, the sheltered harbour of Oysterbed Pier, The White Strand and Derrynane beaches and miles of rugged, untamed countryside are also closeby.

Local Activities

Day Trips
Sneem (in Irish “An tSnaidhm”, meaning “the knot”), is known as The Knot on the Ring, as it forms part of the spectacular Ring of Kerry scenic route. Killarney, Kenmare, the Ring of Beara, Caherdaniel, The Gap of Dunloe and Carrauntouhil (Ireland’s highest mountain at 1039 metres) are within easy reach of Sneem.

The Ring of Kerry is a 175km (110 mile) scenic drive that follows the coastline around the Iveragh Peninsula. One of the most dramatic scenic drives in Ireland, it covers a breathtaking array of sea-coast, lake, river, blanket bog, forest and mountain terrain.

Killarney is famous for its beautiful lakes and forest park. A bustling tourist town, it offers many shops and restaurants as well as such attractions as Ross Castle, Muckross House & Gardens and Torc Waterfall.

Kenmare, known as ‘The Jewel on the Ring of Kerry’ is well-known for its excellent restaurants. A heritage town rich in tradition and craft, the largest stone circle in the region is located here and it is also famous for its Kenmare needlepoint lace.

The Beara peninsula south of Kenmare also offers spectacular scenery. The Healy Pass cuts across the Caha Mountains with views over Bantry Bay and the beautiful, wild landscape of West Cork.

Caherdaniel boasts lively pubs and a blue flag beach at Derrynane, which offers water sports such as windsurfing and waterskiing. Derrynane house, its grounds now a National Historic Park, was the home of ‘The Liberator’, Daniel O’Connell. The world famous monastic site, Skellig Michael, and Valentia Island are also nearby.

Golfing
The golf courses in the locality are amongst the best in the world. Within an hour´s drive you will find several top class facilities. Among these are the Ring of Kerry course, Parknasilla, Waterville, Kenmare Golf Club and a number in Killarney.

Walking

The locality is perfect for all levels of walking enthusiast from those who prefer to stroll to those who seek bigger challenges. The Kerry Way is a mapped and marked out network of walking routes of varying length and difficulty. The MacGillycuddy Reeks mountain range is located close by and provides for those who wish to push themselves a little more.

Other Activities

Watersports, boating, fishing, cycling and tennis are other activities that also can be enjoyed. The innovative and new Kerry Geo-Park includes Sneem offering beautiful scenery and wildlife.
