LOCATION

The Old Convent House is situated on Ireland’s Famous “Ring Of Kerry” coastal road in the village of Sneem. Sneem is set in a picturesque valley surrounded by high mountains and is an ideal location for walkers. This village was awarded the title of Ireland’s tidiest town in 1987. A three minute walk takes you to the centre of the village. Its restful and relaxed atmosphere has been enjoyed by people such as GB Shaw, Charles de Gaulle and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. There are numerous interesting pubs shops, restaurants and art galleries in the village.

In 1866 the Old Convent house was built as a convent by the presentation nuns who taught in the local school until they emigrated to Western Australia in 1891. The O’Sullivan Family bought the house in 1896 and it is being run today by the fifth Generation of the O’Sullivan family, Sean O’Sullivan.

WALKING

The Kerry Way walking route also circumnavigates the peninsula, but is mostly high above the roads following the old butter roads and coaching roads that have long been dis-used offering even more spectacular views without the traffic! Despite its outstanding beauty the route it is still a very quiet walk where you will be on your own in the wilderness for most of the day.

All the Kerry Way treks combine the stately MacGillycuddy’s Reeks mountain range scenery with stunning coastal views out across Dingle Bay.

Starting in the west of Kerry (KT26 and KT27) you have an opportunity to walk on the beautiful Valentia Island before following old turf and coaching roads through the villages of Glenbeigh and Glencar to the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks. Walk over passes to the Black Valley, around the Killarney Lakes and through the National Park to Muckross House and Killarney.

The more strenuous treks (KT38, KT310, KT311) take in the remote hills of the south of Iveragh, starting either in Killarney for the complete ring, or in Sneem for a shorter circuit. You follow the old butter road through Sneem to the Celtic Staigue fort. The route continues through Derrynane National Park to Waterville before crossing a ridge of hills to with the route described above.
