Self catering holiday accommodation wins every time with me. Just imagine spending a week or two in a hotel room. No matter how luxurious the hotel room, it is still a hotel room and spending more than 2 or 3 nights in a hotel room would drive your mad.

With self catering accommodation, after a day or two it starts to feel like your home from home. Alright you have to keep it clean and tidy but that is a small price to pay for all your home comforts while your away. I recently rented a luxury log cabin on Drumcoura Lake in Ballinamore county Leitrim. We had uninterrupted views over the lake and the property was very well equipped with everything you would need for a family self catering holiday. Four bedrooms, three bathrooms, large bedrooms, a great kitchen and a really large sitting room with very high roof and a lovely open fire which we took full advantage off. Plus there was a restaurant and bar onsite. Try get that in any hotel.

I am planning on taking a month in Ireland the first part of 2011. I have been looking at different options and the self catering seems to be the most economical. But what I am really looking for is a small cottage in a small coastal village. Someplace that I can use as a base for day trips, but still have a private place to come "home" to. My other concern is what the requirements are for renting an automobile and driving in Ireland. What do I need to do prior to arrival? Is there somewhere that I can contact to obtain information about the different areas of Ireland and what each area has to offer? I have downloaded a few brochures, but they seem to cater to those that are familiar with Ireland.
Any information will be greatly appreciated.
