“Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wild” William Butler Yeats 1865-1939
Carney Village is tucked away in the heart of Yeats’ country, just 5 miles north of Sligo town and nestled between the majestic BenBulben and the Atlantic Ocean on 'The Wild Atlantic Way'.
Carney House, which was built in the 1600s and is now a listed building, has been the home of the Barber family for over 120 years. It remains the home where the family gather to celebrate special occasions. In 2017, Carney House underwent a major but sympathetic refurbishment, respecting its character and charm and retaining many of the original features. It has adapted smoothly to the additional luxuries of modern day and disabled living, whilst still retaining the feeling of stepping back in time.
The front aspect of Carney House is very rustic and traditional with its ivy-covered walls. The balconies below each top window and the restored sash windows provide an impressive first impression. The splendour of the house continues as you walk inside. The ground floor boasts two comfortable lounges, one of which can be an additional spacious double bedroom (if required and on request), a sociable dining room, a fully equipped dine-in kitchen and a wet room. The kitchen is fully equipped with brand new modern appliances.
A chandelier will light your way as you take the impressive spiral staircase to the four double bedrooms and a generous shower room. The bedrooms at the front of the house have a commanding view of the Atlantic Ocean in the distance, while those at the back of the house have an unobstructed view of BenBulben.
The house is tastefully decorated and designed to respect the age of the home, as well as providing comfort for your stay. It has been adorned with the family’s antique furniture, passed down for generations, and with original artwork and luxurious drapes and flooring.
An open fireplace, a wood-burning stove and oil-fired central heating heat the house, all enhancing the charm of the home. It affords the perfect location to allow you to explore all that the west of Ireland has to offer as well as a place to relax, unwind and spend quality time with those who fill the home with you.
