Co. Limerick, Shannon West - Event Dates
13th June - 16th June 2013
On the 13th through to the 16th June this year, the lovely little town of Bruff in Co Limerick will be celebrating the annual Bloomsday Bruff for the 5th year running. This particular event is unique to the town as it incorporates a re-enactment of the story of Ulysses by James Joyce and is based on the wanderings of its main character Leopard Bloom. There will be street events, music, a Joycan Breakfast at the local church and a fine Bloomsday Dinner in the evening. Many of the local people will adorn costumes, typical of 1904 which will give a real feel of going back to that time. The event is supported by The James Joyce Centre Dublin and has the personal support of Senator David Norris so it’s taken quite seriously in itself but obviously not seriously enough as to not have any fun at all. There will be plenty of that with costume clad folk, horse driven carriages, three documentaries on James Joyce and singing one of Joyce’s favourite songs into the night.
Limerick is the third largest city in the Republic of Ireland and is not only famous for its funny, four lined stanzas but also has produced some of Ireland’s best musical artists, including the band The Cranberries and also comedians like funny men Pat Shortt, Jimmy Carr and Karl Spain. The world wide famous Film ‘Angela’s Ashes was also filmed here and a walking tour of the film can be taken around the town. Tourism here is growing at a heady pace and the city is the first to introduce ‘Street Ambassadors,’ people who are selected to help others around and make their stay more pleasurable. There is lots of Victorian Architecture to be seen in the forms of St Mary’s Cathedral, St John’s Cathedral and King John’s Castle and joining them is Ireland’s most famous Hunts Museum, where the Antrim Cross, a sketch by Picasso and a bronze horse, said to be from a design by Leonardo da Vinci are both on display. There is also a vivacious nightlife here with many pubs and lots of blues, jazz, rock and traditional type bands.
