Joe Mooney Summer School is proud to announce the 2013 dates for its fabulous week long festival from 20th-27th July, giving another chance for anyone with an appreciation and love of all Irish music, musical instruments and dance to come along and share in the pleasure. Joe himself was a County Councillor and townsman who was very proud of his Leitrim heritage and achieved so much in promoting the town and the school where anyone can come and gain knowledge of such instruments as the accordion, fiddle, flute, tin whistle, uillean pipes, harp, banjo and the famous bodhram (not to mention Irish set dancing and Sean Nos style singing). This place really is overflowing with Irish musical tradition and folklore.
Leitrim town Drumshanbo, which takes its name from ‘Ridge of the hold huts,’ is surrounded by a very attractive area of mellow hills, woodlands and lakes and is overlooked by Sliabh an Iarainn ‘The Iron Mountain,’ labelled so due to its history of iron being mined there for three hundred years. It has a collection of pubs and restaurants and many opportunities for hill walking in the very scenic surrounds and also the chance to sample some angling in some of Shannon’s great lakes. All of this you can combine with your week long jubilee of traditional Irish music and dance with the Joe Mooney Summer School Festival.
