WALKING
The Cavan Way
The Cavan Way is a pleasant hill and valley walking connection between the Leitrim Way at Dowra, a small village near the source of the River Shannon and the Ulster Way at Blacklion. Following generally the course of the young river to its source at the mystical Shannon 'Pot', the walk traverses quiet valley and riverside landscapes to the more unenclosed uplands of the spring line of the river's source. The walker will enjoy the upland section between the 'Pot' and Blacklion, which includes the forested Burren area and its cemetery of ancient tombs, stone megaliths and monuments. Fine views are obtained from these elevated upland areas.

Route Details:
Dowra - Shannon Pot - Blacklion. Total Distance: 26km/16 miles.
Longest Stage: Dowra to Blacklion - 26km/16 miles.
Highest Point: Giant's Grave - 260m/850ft.
The Cavan Way Map Guide is published by Cavan County Council and available from Eastwest Mapping and tourist offices in the region.

Cuilcagh Mountain Walks
Encompassing the highland area of Counties Cavan and Fermanagh, a largely undiscovered treasure throve of scenic beauty exists above the floor of the Arney and Shannon valleys. The published walks range from 1km to 17km in length and embrace the megalithic sites in the Burren area of Co. Cavan above Blacklion, the Marlbank Scenic Loop near Florence Court and the famous Marble Arch Caves in Co. Fermanagh.

Dun an Rí Forest Park
Dun na Rí Forest Park near Kingscourt, is a place of surprising contrasts. There are romantic walks through deep, leafy glades over old bridges. At one spot the trees clear, giving marvellous views north to Slieve Gullion in Co. Armagh and the Mountains of Mourne. The park once belonged to the Pratts, a local landlord family. Visitors can see the ice house where they stored food in the days before refrigerators. The centrepiece of the park is perhaps the Wishing Well.

Killykeen Forest Park
Five miles west of Cavan town is Killykeen Forest Park, in the heart of Cavan's lakelands. Marked trails lead into the dark forests where visitors can view the park's fauna and flora, disturbed only by the sound of birdsong and the rippling waters of Lough Erne. Killykeen is a special place in all seasons and at all times.

WATERSPORTS
Lakeside Manor Hotel, Virginia

Amazing new year's

"Had a lovely stay in the 4 bedroom walled garden. About a 20 second walk from the hotel for when we wanted to use their facilities (had two dinners and some of our group used the spa). Hotel quality huge bedrooms and immaculate bathrooms. Very comfortable and spacious living area as well as separate (and equally spacious and modern) kitchen and dining area. Really enjoyed our stay. We will most certainly be back. Great way to spend New Year's"

Superb accommodation, tranquil setting

"We stayed in July 2012 for four days and loved it - surpassed our expectations. The location, right on the Estate, was perfect - a 3 minute walk took us to the hotel for breakfast and lunch, and we made great use of the Spa facilities - the best value packages that I have found in Ireland to date, around 110 euro for two treatments, a light lunch (in a lovely dining room) and use of the facilities. The gym was great, with glass walls affording great views, and the treatments were bliss! The house itself felt brand new, with lovely contemporary decor and furnishings, and was much more spacious than we anticipated, four good sized double bedrooms upstairs. We especially loved the dining space, with its high ceilings and natural light, and seating for 10. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, would return in a heartbeat."

Farnham Estate, Cavan

"Good location, close to Cavan and shops. Good walks on the estate and on nearby estates. The cottage was spacious, welll appointed, warm, comfortable and clean. Booking was straightforward with very helpful people. The services were prompt and efficient. In fact, everyone involved in the arranging and managing the break was charming and helpful. Access to the hotel restaurants was a bonus. The buffet Sunday lunch was particularly good value. We shall definitely plan to return and would recommend it to others."
