Located just a short stroll from either Arundel’s or the Tin pub and the harbour. Drive through the solid timber electric gates up to the impressive house. This is a brand-new property lovingly built by its owner on a wonderful 5-acre woodland site with both an outdoor jacuzzi and an indoor sauna.
Designed to blend in beautifully with its surroundings, Beechwood House has been built to be environmentally conscious using the most efficient modern technologies.
The kitchen and dining areas are set to the rear of the house with large sliding patio doors leading out onto the private south facing terrace, overlooking the woodland and river, with garden furniture, woodfire pizza oven and BBQ.
From the Terrace area you can access a wooden pavilion with seating, for quiet appreciation of the woodlands and river.
Our guests will also enjoy full use of an outdoor hot tub/ jacuzzi to allow for relaxing soak after a busy day site seeing.
The kitchen is a large and spacious area, yet it manages to still be a cosy space and woodburning insert stove certainly helps create that feeling. It is very well equipped with everything you will need including an electric oven, microwave, kettle, toaster, dishwasher and all the crockery, cutlery, glassware and cooking equipment you will need during your stay. There is a large island unit with four stools and there is also another sitting area looking out towards the woods and beyond.
In the winter-time you can catch glimpses of the sea, however when the foliage is back on the trees in the Spring, you are treated to complete privacy in your own little haven in West Cork!
The dining room has a large table which was created using the wood from a felled ash tree on the site – a beautiful homage to the original site. There are seats for up to 8 people, along with a bench which can be pulled out to seat another few people. This room also has sliding patio doors out onto the south facing terrace so while sitting at the table you can still feel like you are part of the surrounding woodland.
There is a separate utility room with a washing machine, tumble dryer and large fridge freezer. Most of the appliances are made by Bosch.
The sitting room overlooks the south facing terrace area with double door openings, the beechwood flooring was created from trees felled from the site with great characteristic features. It has a warm and cosy wood burning stove, couches and TV.
WiFi is available free of charge to guests and there is full mobile phone coverage both of which can be turned off if you wish to be disconnected from the outside world.
Beechwood House has 5 bedrooms and can sleep 10-11 people very comfortably.
- Bedroom one is downstairs and it has a king sized bed. It has access to the downstairs bathroom with a walk-in shower. The remaining 4 bedrooms are located upstairs.
- The master bedroom is very spacious and has lots of storage. At certain times of the year you can see over towards the harbour. It has a king size bed and en suite with shower.
- The third bedroom has an en suite shower and king bed
- The fourth room with two single beds
- The fifth is a spacious room with a double and single bed. The main bathroom upstairs has a bath with a shower over it.
Upstairs there is a large landing area with a seating area, perfect for relaxing with a good book in peace and quiet. Not only this, but there is a sauna for your use during your stay. Wonderful for heating up the bones after a dip in the sea or after a long walk!
Beechwood House is set in 5-acre tranquil site which is comprised of meandering woodland walks along a riverbank which is home to a wide variety of wildlife such as trout, herons and otters, perfect for exploring and enjoying this very special pocket of West Cork.
There is a barbeque at this property.
For this reason, children will need careful supervision at all times when playing outside as the river is not fenced in.
LOCAL INFORMATION
Ahakista (Atha Ciste) is located approximately halfway along the Sheep's Head peninsula between Durrus and Kilcrohane in County Cork, Ireland. It is a wooded coastal village with a deep and sheltered harbour which overlooks picturesque Kitchen Cove and the Mizen peninsula.
The sheltered deep-water harbour is home to both fishing boats and pleasure craft and the annual Ahakista Regatta is held each August bank holiday weekend.
There is a stone circle in the area at Gorteanish that dates to the Bronze Age (2200 – 600 B.C.).
Graham Norton (comedian and talk show host) owns a holiday home in Ahakista which overlooks the harbour and Dunmanus Bay and he is often in the area and is a regular host of the annual Pub Quiz (tickets only).
Ahakista has a church and two pubs – both with beer gardens and sea views. The Tin Pub is one of Ireland’s quirkiest drinking spots. Arundel’s by the Pier is a family-run bar and restaurant located in an idyllic location overlooking Kitchen Cove in Ahakista. From the beer garden on the water’s edge you can watch the fishermen bring in their catch before ordering fresh fish from the wide-ranging menu. There is also playground to help keep little ones entertained while the grown-ups enjoy their meals!
Heron Gallery Café is open seasonally and serves Fairtrade organic coffee and teas, delicious scones and cakes, and, in summer, simple, wholesome lunches using locally-sourced organic produce. There is a lovely sunny terrace for those precious sunny days and free Wi-Fi can be accessed both inside and outside.
ACTIVITIES
Ahakista has a small sandy beach, and the 90 kilometres (56 miles) Sheep's Head Way marked trail crosses through the village.
Seefin loop walks extend from Ahakista village and form part of the Sheep’s Head Way walking route: part of the 88km Sheep’s Head Way walking route which skirts the whole coastline of the peninsula. Bespoke walking tours can also be arranged with our experienced guides, and shore fishing gives you another great way to explore this coastline.
Ahakista Regatta & Festival
Join the Ahakista Regatta each August – a celebration of life by the sea with a Hawaiian twist! Throughout the summer, listen to music sessions in The Tin Pub, visit the Heron Gallery and its beautiful gardens, or watch the boats come in at Arundel’s by the Pier.
Heron Gallery Gardens
The garden is open from April to the end of August. Visitors to the gallery and café are welcome to wander around. The organic gardens are informal, with colourful flower beds radiating out from a pond and pergola. There is a wildlife pond and walk around a large pond surrounded by a wildflower meadow and young woodland run by wildlife artist Annabel Langrish.
Air India Memorial
The tranquil Air India memorial garden in Ahakista offers you beautiful views across Dunmanus Bay. It’s a special place of pilgrimage for the families who lost loved ones in the Air India Disaster of 1985. The tranquil garden is lovingly tended by the firm friends they have made in Ahakista in the years since that terrible event.
Local Art and Crafts
The area is host to the annual Stone Symposium headed by Victor Daly, stone sculptor where you can learn traditional stone carving skills.
Dunbeacon potteries run by Helen Ennis and Dun Oir Crafts.
Security Deposit
A damage/security deposit of 500.00 is required prior to arrival. This will be taken as a bank transfer/revolut card transfer. The owner will make contact 7 days prior to arrival to arrange this and the funds will be released within 7 days of departure once the owners are satisfied that there are no breakages or damages.
